I'm a leftist; it's also known that the producers went out of their way (incl. deleting comments on YouTube to falsely emphasize remaining sexist ones) to blow up the 'controversy' about identity politics, to obscure what a huge piece of shit the movie was in artistic terms.

I'm female.
I get fed up when companies purposely jam females in places nobody asked them and go "WOW LOOK WE MADE GHOST BUSTERS FOR GIRLS. COME BUY IT."
It's incredibly patronizing.
If you wanna make badass female storylines go for it. But I disagree with companies calling me sexist when they lazily toss females somewhere and expect me to cheer them on.
I think that's more of the reason why people were angry and frustrated. Its super lazy and mocking females as a whole thinking that we'll just throw money at them for doing something so low effort.
Anyways that's my view on it. I'm not too invested in Ghost Busters and wasn't interested in watching the remake due to that attitude. So I didn't.

I agree that the outrage about that movie was completely blown out of proportion. I didn't watch it and it was probably just a mediocre remake like many others.
It was supposed to have mainstream appeal, and getting riled up because of a female cast is really not fair. However I do understand that the original cast was one of the main components of the original movie and a drastic change like this won't be appreciated by some fans of the original movie.
Just give women original roles in movies, instead of forcing them into these established roles. The main protagonist of “Rogue One“ for instance is female and did a great job.
There appears to be a small group that blames white males for all their problems, which is picked up and amplified by the conservative media to support their claim to being the “real victim“.
