To be pedantic, the modern Mac OS X has a UNIX-based kernel.

Ah, this was the first ever video I added to my favourites when I made my first youtube account.

Incidentally, it is also the only video left on my favourites list, on my first youtube account. The others all having been removed for copyright infringement.

Seriously, fuck youtube. Now I just keepvid that shit.

I remember back when the whole Mac brand loyalty crap was starting, basically right after DOS when computer illiterates were struggling with Windows and hated how "complicated" it was.

A family friend of mine had just gotten Macs for everyone in his family, raving about how great they were, and he decided to demo them for my family and me. Since he was particularly bragging about how "amazing" it was for media, he decided to show us how great it was at playing movies. The file type was unsupported, and the shitty Mac movie player couldn't acquire codecs for the file type.

He spent 30 minutes demoing how easy it was to fix problems like this on a Mac, but gave up when he was unable to fix it.

Naturally he still was trying to tell us how great Macs were for the rest of the evening.

PC for home.
Linux for mobile (Android).
Apple for MP3 players... which have been replaced by Androids.

None of this was ever true with macintosh machines unless you had truly defective hardware. The dialogue boxes he describes don't exist and PCs shared all of the same issues.

There are reasons to hate apple, none of which can be found in this video. This is simply the testimonial of someone who never wanted to give macs a chance. I use both platforms day in and day out, and they both have their advantages.

P.S. I've been recovering files on my Macs for years, you only cant do so if you've decided to secure delete (overwrite the file 7 times) and the system warns you about it beforehand. I also understand that he's talking about the OS that was in place 9 years ago but I've been working with that one on a regular basis too because I have parents and Macs simply do not break down.

You must have been absent for this era in Mac's history. The iMac he had in the video couldn't be given away to people after a few years, because they were so horrible to use. I gave up on trying to do anything with Macs in the early 2000s because I hated using them so much. I'm sure they've improved since then, but they still have the same made-for-idiots philosophy that I absolutely can not stand. Now Microsoft is trying to emulate it, and that pisses me off.

I dunno, I still have my original iMac (same as in the video) and I loved that machine. At the time my PC was a running NT and it wasn't like that was an operating system that anyone looks back on fondly. I use Windows, Linux and OS X on a daily basis and each one has their quirks. I wouldn't want to do db development on a mac and I sure as hell wouldn't want to do music production on a PC. The made-for-idiots philosophy is frustrating for dev work but if I'm recording a song I don't need a bunch of conflicting driver messages (and if I'm particularly unlucky a BSoD) because I decided to switch audio interfaces on the fly.
