The only "bug" was that the recording wasn't sent to Amazon for storage, like it was supposed to. I'm completely sure it is designed to record you at all times, and to forward that data to Amazon at all times. Regardless of any bullshit Amazon may tell you, just read the terms of service you agree to by using the damn device!
https://www.ama_zon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201809740
"Amazon processes and retains your Alexa Interactions"
"Alexa uses recordings of your voice to create an acoustic model of your voice characteristics."
"If you use a Third Party Service, we may exchange related information with that service"
"By using Alexa, you agree to be bound by those terms."
"The Software will provide Amazon with information about your use of Alexa, your Alexa Interactions, and your Alexa Enabled Products and Auxiliary Products (such as device type, name, features, status, network connectivity, and location). This information may be stored on servers outside the country in which you live."
I could keep quoting, but you get the idea...
https://developer.ama_zon.com/support/legal/alexa/alexa-voice-service/terms-and-agreements
Also worth noting is their "Privacy" Notice.
https://www.ama_zon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=468496
- "We receive and store certain types of information whenever you interact with us."
I do have to add though, in all honesty, anyone with a cell-phone probably shouldn't feel too holier-than-thou...
NOTE: Remove the _ between "Ama" and "zon" to see the links. Voat blocks all links from that shithole.
[–] 9-11 1 point 1 point 2 points (+2|-1) ago
ToS are always scary. Voat has an indemnity clause that says that if you post or say something that gets voat, inc sued, that you agree to pay all court costs, any potential fine and pay for their lawyer, any high priced lawyer they also technically own all posts and comments and you agree to license your oc to voat for any purpose including for profit promotion.
[–] MinorLeakage 0 points 3 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago
Would you mind providing me a link? I don't doubt you, I'm just mildly retarded.
[–] WORF_MOTORBOATS_TROI 0 points 2 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago
Voat cant ask me to do shit if they dont know who I am
This is scarier than Alexa, this of it, every post, comment and reply that you typed used against you.

Mark steyn says how last century was masculine authoritarianism. But this century is femine authoritarianism. That's why the left is so blind to it.

Who ever put this device in their home so they can talk to a machine to do meaningless tasks for them deserve to be recorded and spied on. Our phones are not any better. No headphones with a microphone, no microphone, no phone.. It's the best we can do at the moment, but it would not be hard to put a microphone in ANY electronic device and have that device connect to a low grade phone network. Quality can suffer and upload times can be as long as they want.
When it comes down to it, we are all being spied on more than likely through every device created past 2014.
past 2014.
2014 is a pretty arbitrary date.
...it's every digital device created, ever, that can TX/RX, and uses electricity. Even devices you think don't have electrical components in them can have power sources and transmitters embedded in them, or technology that when illuminated becomes active and begins gathering data and storing or transmitting it.

Speakers can work as microphones.
Do you have any resources I could look into regarding this?

When paranoia is justified and has a rational basis, then we can just call it caution.
[–] midnightblue1335 0 points 4 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago
I had a long conversation with a friend about this topic a few days ago. Basically we were talking about when paranoia is good, and when it can cross the line into becoming unhealthy.
And then I get several ads about treatments for paranoid schizophrenia. I do not have mental illness in my family, have never researched it or showed any interest in it. I find it too much of a coincidence that I'd suddenly get ads like this shortly after discussing the topic. My phone was in my pocket during the conversation.
It's a real mindfuck. It's almost as if they're gaslighting- "Why are you talking about paranoia with your friend? You must be a schizophrenic person. Here are some ads for schizo drugs. We're not listening into your conversations in order to tailor your ads based on certain keywords. That'd be.... crazy!"

I think the greatest (justified) fear is governments using it to spy on normal people and persecute them. Having a random person hear in someone else's home? Unsettling but ultimately minor. Most people are respectful and wouldn't misuse the access.
Regardless, these are on the list of something I'd never accept, even as a free gift (along with inkjet printers. nope, not even once). Oh damn, my cellphone's battery is getting low, I need to charge it.

Get this- I was having a conversation with a friend about the concept of paranoia, specifically when it's healthy and when it crosses a line into being unhealthy. The word "paranoia/paranoid" was thrown about frequently.
As I'm walking home shortly after this, I put on a podcast, and the ad I got? A fucking ad talking about how paranoid schizophrenics can get help. I have never researched anything related to mental health on any of my devices.
So I'm just being paranoid, right? Maybe, but this isn't the first time something like this has happened. I have a comment on a similar submission here where I told the story of how I had a conversation with a neighbor about mowing the lawn. For the rest of the day, every single ad I saw was lawn mowing/landscaping related. I have NEVER, ever researched any equipment or companies related to this. I have other strange examples on top of these.
Am I fucking crazy, here? It's not really far-fetched to think that these voice recognition programs listen to what you talk about, and tailor what ads you will see based on key phrases and words.
A company called “silent pocket” has some great copper lined electronic cases and sleeves. Awesome stuff. It works and I keep everything from my wallet, phone, laptops etc in one. (Not cheap, however - although you can make your own faraday tech by ordering the copper fabric online)

Bro, You might be "fucking crazy", But not "here." They listen to you 24/7 and use that information accordingly That's literally how it works.
It's fucked Up, because they are fucking with Cosmic synchronicity... I mean, there are a plethora of reasons that it's fucked up. But I that Nothing Is a coincidence if AI is involved....

Alexa, record everything I say and send it to the NSA.
Ok
[–] 9-11 0 points 15 points 15 points (+15|-0) ago
It's been subpoenad in a murder trial already. Amazon doesn't want it to be a common knowledge thing that "somewhere" exists a recording of everything - including you getting random murdered.
[–] slowcrash101 0 points 11 points 11 points (+11|-0) ago
Shit, people act as if that little box is the only thing recording you. Your phone is your life, and they have access to all of it. All your worst privacy fears have already come true, but convenience is a stronger drug than heroin so we ignore it.

[–] hyppielost 0 points 1 point 1 point (+1|-0) ago

[–] prairie 0 points 5 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago
Alexa, stop recording everything and don't send anything to the NSA.
"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."
[–] infamousEB ago
alexa: i already did.
