poking around google for a page that would explain in a way that aligned with my own experience came up short. i am actually a little surprised i'm having such difficulty putting it into words! the term has become more experiential for me over time rather than intellectual. let's see what i can do here...
"the cosmic joke" = recognizing the simultaneously perfect/imperfect nature of everything. a salute to the often absurd and relentlessly silly nature of how things work out in the end. like we're all actors in a grand performance - knowing that even when i am angry, frustrated, jealous, it's all exactly as it should be, i am playing the role i am meant to play in that moment. (lots of good learning about oneself like this!)(easier dealt with in retrospect, harder to keep in perspective in the moment, especially when you're angry!) knowing that every moment i've lived so far, every decision i've made so far, have brought me to this moment, right now. being able to laugh at the utter improbability of everything, while reveling in how fucking awesome it all is at the same time.
maybe that helps? this page, while excerpted from "Spirituality for Dummies," which makes me cringe a little, has a couple of good nuggets in it: enlightenment
this is an old story that's been floating around a while: The Egg, by Andy Weir
i don't know if any of this is helpful at all and maybe i've just confounded things further. maybe not, though. hope it was helpful :)
