The value of thrift is lost on those that spend money as soon as it comes in, and purchase items for their immediate status representation.

Thrift is a fundamental necessity in helping people rise out of poverty, but that great economic thinker Oscar Wilde wouldn’t know anything about that. His experience with poverty was limited to sodomizing working class teenage boys.

Aye. He's fine for snarky comments, but it's best to leave the economics to economists. As Murray Rothbard said,
“It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a ‘dismal science.’ But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.”

I'm thoroughly convinced poverty in first world nations is a state of mind. These people simply fucking suck with money and would rather burn it than have it invested or even sit in a checking account. Just take a look at what happens when poor people win the lottery, they're back in the trailer park a few years later.
