This is intriguing, especially given that the actual embryo cells seem to active direct the placental cells. Given that the latter also manipulate the immune system of the mother so that the unborn and the placenta itself are not rejected as foreign tissue, one might almost call it parasitic - which in turn raises interesting questions on just how the earliest mammals developed placentas in the first place.
