Former Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has said Dublin could have to 'play hard ball' with Britain over Brexit.

Mr Ahern, who was one of the key figures behind the Good Friday Agreement, said Ireland should insist the UK stays closely aligned with the Republic after EU withdrawal.

Asked whether Ireland should take a tough stance in negotiations over cross-border trade and alignment, Mr Ahern told BBC2's Newsnight: 'I'm afraid the answer to that is we have to play hard ball.'

For those unaware, Bertie is the shithead who ran Ireland on the run up to the financial crisis and had numerous pay to play scandals. He's our equivalent of Clinton.

Clinton: The Good Friday Agreement could crumble because of Brexit | Daily Mail Online

"Hillary Clinton has warned that the hand of history will be 'heavy and unforgiving' if Brexit is allowed to 'undermine' the Good Friday Agreement."

'The Good Friday agreement was founded on mutually reinforcing rights and obligations and cemented through referendums in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. '

'Britain and the EU are yet to find a solution to the question of whether there will be a hard border between the UK and Ireland after Brexit. ', "In other developments, five former Labour Northern Ireland secretaries also wrote to the paper to warn that a hard border could 'threaten the very existence' of the agreement."

'Among them are Lord Mandelson, Lord Hain and Lord Reid of Cardowan. '
