Valve gets rid of the Steam Machine section | PC Gamer

'While their Steam Machine partners were designing their first boxes, Valve was busy making their own device: the Steam Link. '

'The old Steam Machine page can still be reached, but not through the front page. '

'The Steam Machine launch wasn’t helped by Valve’s second bid for domination of the living room. '

'Remember Steam Machines?'

'It essentially did the same thing: allowing people to play Steam games on their TV, but instead of being a desktop surrogate, the Steam Link was a streaming device. '

Doesn't seem like they can, I had high hopes for both the steam controller and the steam machine - I thought it was a great marketing play, but the way they rolled them out and supported them was lame. Imagine if they'd rolled out the Steam Machine with an enhanced half-life bundle (or dare I say even a new valve game).

I think we need to just accept that Valve is just an intermediary making transactional profits - we can hope at least one day they'll licence their IPs to developers but even that is unlikely.

Oh man, I still use my Steam Controller a lot, their scheme with "Big Picture/SteamOS" is pretty fantastic, I love the little two touchpads that turn into a keyboard, it's very intuitive. I still use Steam Link hooked up to my TV, and it runs great with ethernet connection. There are some apps and games I prefer to run on the TV.

you can even stream emulators through to your TV, so you can play wiiU games and stuff on your TV with an xbox controller or what have you. I really also enjoy just being able to easily surf my computer or browser from my TV. Steam Link is fantastic.

To be fair, you couldv just copy their build and get it to a pc shop or order the parts themselves. They were probably aiming brand fanboys who dont care about the cost.

I already run a Linux machine with Steam, so no point. The Steam machines were pointless because they can't play the majority of Steam games for Windows.

it could have worked if they'd actually given people a reason to use steamOS.

I tried it, it was shit. It was my first linux, very noob un-friendly. I forgot about it, I keep saying mint was my linux cherry. I had it for two days, to be fair.

Their Steam Link is all we need. Also I wish it would succeed because Linux NEEDS games, that's all it needs.

It already has games. I've switched to Linux desktop for years now and its going great. Just because it doesn't have EVERY game doesn't mean it isn't more than sufficient to game on now

Honestly, Linux has a long ways to go still. Games would get enough people yelling at the developers to actually fix shit that is wrong with it.

The problem with desktop Linux is that it's copying a fucking nightmare of an experience. It's no wonder that the only successful Linux in user space is Android, which removed the horrible UI experience, and had an app strategy that just worked.

And no surprise that the next gen stuff will dump Linux all together.

I bought a steam box for my daughter. She likes her pc games and it was a nice small gaming pc. Did it’s job.

I knew it would be a failure from the moment I heard about it. Valve can do great stuff, but hardware releases like that simply cannot be sat on or delayed, delaying hardware almost guarantees it will simply be outdated upon its release. Plus Steam OS is a pile of garbage and they don't have a customer support team. Fuck valve now though, Gabe is a fat Jew has been.
