Drug prices would go up as the taliban took over...again. Gotta keep that steady supply flowing and Afghanistan has loads of medicinal drugs growing plentiful there.

I was ddeployed to afghanistan twice. we burned marijuana fields and never touched opium fields. I remember asking my lt if this was serious and this is what we were tasked to do for mission when it came up. He gave me a defeated look and we went on with our day. We even hired out contractors to bulldoze the fields. Afterwards, we would give the guy who owned the fields rice or some shit to grow instead. They would then HAVE to grow opium to make up for their losses. I wish I was kidding.

I don't r3member exactly but I remember he remained as professional in his response as possible. To be honest, it's not like I understood it (opium) at the time, I just knew what we were doing felt weird and seemed not to make any sense; we trusted our leadership

Many people are saying opium/poppies.
But the main reason is for the coming war with Iran.
It is a very mountainous and rugged country. Making it very easy for Iran to defend. To defeat them the US/NATO/EU/Saudi Arabia/the Kurds will need every advantage they can get.
Afghanistan provides a safe place for bases on Iran's Eastern border. And the ability to attack from there.
You can go into all the finer details of it, but in the end they need bases on Iran's Eastern border for the coming war with Iran.
