Coaches had much better job security back then as opposed to today. He was the #1 overall draft pick and back then you just didn't want to give up that huge of an investment quickly.
Plus the fact that it was the dead-ball era so those numbers, while bad by today's standards and still bad by those standards, were not nearly as bad back then as they would be considered today.
