They probably were puffballs but they were wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too gone to eat. They already dried up, exploded, and released all their spores. There's no moisture left. Any minor amount of toxin would be amplified 100x

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... Probably a good call. Hard to tell sometimes. My father and I found one one the side of the road a long time ago. Was about the size of a basketball and hadn't burst the spores out yet.

He sliced them thin, breaded, and fried them in a pan of butter. So damn good.

Odd to see this here. Cultivating mushrooms outside is impossible, and most puffballs aren't edible. Stick to Boletes.

I think these ones were edible at one stage, but i take your concern onboard...don’t eat it unless you’re sure. I seem to accidentally cultivate moulds and moss quite easily outdoors, i was told it’s an indicator of an established and balanced environment.

Almost all Boletes are edible, and the ones that don't taste good at least won't kill you. Puffballs can kill you. That random mushroom growing in your yard? That can probably kill you. Mushroom foraging is an art.
