If you don't need to print colors just get a simple black laser jet printer. Cost should be about the same and a cartridge of laser jet ink lasts for 10s of thousands of printouts not 50 like an inkjet. I haven't changed an ink cartridge in 3 years an print things all the time.

I heard that Epson printer prices are increasing while they are reducing the prices of their ink and toner. I haven't bought a printer in several years so I haven't followed it closely to see if that is accurate or not.

I haven't bought cartridges in years, when my inkjet printer runs out, I just buy a new one. Eat that shit Epson. :p Keep selling those printers at a loss ;)

Companies and government departments need to produce a standard for printer ink cartridges. Since they are allegedly price goring us the industry will hate. However after a delay the printer manufacturers will produce printers that use it. The ink makers will sell their ink in those cartridges. Competition will eventual reduce prices.

Laser printers are where it's at. Scan the thrift stores for an old one. They're big and heavy but chances are it still works. They're faster, have better print quality and have a much lower per page cost.

That's your choice. But there is nothing inherently wrong with buying used.
