Lentils are seriously the best thing ever. Super cheap, lots of nutrients, lots of fiber, and you can make all kinds of stuff with them. I adore lentils.

HERETIC! But in all seriousness these pigs don't realize that veggies, beans, rice and chicken is not that expensive for multiple meals.

There is no way I can get chicken that cheap.

Chicken leg quarters go for less than a dollar a pound if you get them in the big 10 pound bags, I have seen them as low as $0.47 a pound.

I bought a 20 pound bag of legs and thighs at my local hyvee for $0.29lb last week.

Lentils are AMAZING! There's a vegan lentil soup called Harira soup and it has chopped veg and no oil (depending on the recipe, but you really don't need any) and it's so great. You can also thicken it and use it as a stew if you wanted to spice up tofu or meat.

FYI, it's a bit like chili, in that it tastes better on the second day because the flavors soak into the lentils.

That’s awesome (and delicious). Being a cheap person who loves healthy-food bargains, I have often thought of putting up a webpage with a month of inexpensive healthy menus, just to document how much money someone could save, by eating homecooked meals. Not that the average fat would pay attention, but still...!

I see so many posts that list "lentils" as food. I'm not convinced.

What? Lentils are amazing! I make a soup recipe with them through out the winter, if you have an HEB near you grab the store brand and that recipe is on th back. Just add a hot pepper before you cook it and a handful of chopped cilantro just before its done. Use olive oil instead of ham hocks if you want it meat free. Be prepared to fart a lot though lol. If you want the recipe let me know and I'll find it.

I tried getting into it. Yeah, they suck. It's the cuticle film on them that seperates off and never cooks down. If there was an effortless way to take those off and get rid of them letntils would approach split pea level.

Oh, also split peas are almost as cheap as lentils and have a lot of the dietary advantages so.. split pea. Just do that. Now it costs 24 cents and would be a killer meal.
