it was used in such a spectacular way that it's going to be hard to top. Ie "this gif has been used the best possible way it can be, it's now retired".

That's not what a retired gif is. A retired gif is when it's used in the only possible situation where it would make sense.

No what Blackjackel wrote is exactly what it means.

I think he's saying that when a gif is used particularly awesomely to the point nobody can use it better, it gets enshrined, or something like that.

I know what a retired GIF is. But this gif has not been retired, in my opinion. I think this gif can be used again, and I think there are even better examples that this gif could fall under.

I had never heard the term before really.

It... couldn't be more perfect... the sad face on yoshi turning to anger. The backflip to the middle finger.

It perfectly captured everything.

When a gif is used perfectly, it has found its purpose in life, it can finally retire. (I'm bad at explaining things)

It'll never be used this well again, so it's now retired because no one could ever top it

I gif being "Retired" means there will never be a better time to use it, and the gif is incredibly relevant to the topic. But some argue that this wouldn't be a retired gif since there's nothing mentioning Reddit or voat, in the gif and/or the topic in question isn't anything about Mario.

It's old and no one uses it anymore
