For an effective punch, you use your whole body. Push off with your back leg and twist at the waist. You should be relaxed until you're about to make contact. At that point, you should tighten your abs and your punching arm and fist. Make sure your thumb is outside your fist or you'll hurt your thumb. Punch slightly past your contact point. Don't straighten your arm completely so that you don't hyperextend your joint (mainly elbow and shoulder). You want to be standing straight when you make contact. If you're leaning forward or backwards, you'll probably lose your balance. It takes practice.

Edit: And hit with your first 2 knuckles (index finger and middle finger). Otherwise, you might sprain your wrist.

If you curl your fingers, it's much more effective.

This is pretty much how it's done by an Englishman well, more fighting like one anyway

Like basically anything in life, a lot of good videos online for this... pick and choose: https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=how+to+throw+a+punch&btnG=&oq=&gs_l=&pbx=1#q=how+to+throw+a+punch&newwindow=1&tbm=vid

My advice is try to find a good MMA gym and train like crazy, and then do your best to avoid every fight that comes your way.

If it happens, you'll clean house, but if it doesn't you still won because there is a 100% you won't be in jail nor the hospital and you will most likely never see that idiot starting the fight ever again in your life.

Question, do you play golf or baseball?

edit: or lacrosse

No, I don't.

I have considered, though.

Oh ok! Well the motions are fairly similar. Starting at the hips/core which is where your power is drawn for. To practice you can over-exaggerate a twist in your hips right before driving your shoulder and hand forward past your target.

Step into it. Aim for the nose. Be prepared for the consequences

I heard when a pro boxer was asked for just one tip for someone who had never done it, he said "punch in straight lines"

A big John Wayne wind up punch isn't great... a bunch of small fast punches are generally more effective.
