Imagine your life changing so fast in those first 10 minutes. First they were by the bridge overlooking the canal. The water was steadily rising but maybe no cause for concern, then it started getting really high. As high as the barrier. Then before you know it after 5 minutes your whole town is flooded with debris floating around the football field and you're on the 3rd of 4th floor of a building watching. It makes me remember how fortunate I have been to not have something so unfortunate happen to me.

The scary thing is those canal walls gave them a lot more time to react compared to some of places that were hit. I think in some places the water came and went in around 3 minutes. Thankfully they have those flood warning sirens in a lot of places now, back when the 2004 tsunami happened in Indonesia and Sri Lanka I don't think they had any warning at all. that one killed over 200,000 people within a couple of minutes.
