https://soundcloud.com/thesidewalktrio/bad-fish-sidewalk-trio Here’s a real quick recording we did last summer for a booking portfolio. I’m on guitar and vocals, but it’s by no means a polished studio track. Just a couple dudes enjoying their Friday night!

That's pretty good, actually. It sounds like you've some seriously rehearsal time together, or you've played with each other a bunch.

Myself and the drummer spend a lot of time playing together, as our main gig is a technical death metal band; and our metal singer does bass in the trio. I’m just obsessed with music regardless of genre. It’s really cool when you can find other guys, especially involved with death metal, that feel the same way. Once our metal record is done, we plan on doing some recording for my original material, which is mostly a blend of blues, jazz, and classic country. Anyways, thanks for listening!

Sounds like you're trying to go somewhere with that. Hmm...

Also, neat rendition of Tull. ;-)

Sometimes... I'll be sleeping soon, I hope.

I did get some sleep last night. I got home around 02:00 and was asleep by 03:30. I was up by 08:00 and got shit done and then went off to rehearse. I'm fucking exhausted.

As always, I'll get you started.

I have some new flamenco for you (I got my guitar back), but it's not edited up yet and I'm not going to do that at this hour of the morning. So, this is older - but I don't think I've shared it here.

I also have some nice new equipment. ;-) I don't have anything to share with that just yet.

This is from the other thread.

Forgive my laziness in not responding to each of you as individuals but, as I believe kids are wont to say today, "My ass is tired."

I'll write more later - perhaps after some sleep, perhaps after settling in. I'm just now arrived home. Well, within the past hour...

So, Friday night went well enough. I was content to go play that night but, frankly, the band (I only know one of them well, and hadn't played with them before) did not meet my expectations.

For the short version, I am much older than most of them. I don't mind ages - I respect the artists who have taken the time to master their craft. Each and every member of this band is quite acceptable.

However, they're the most unrehearsed professional band I've played with in a long time. They wanted (needed is a word that I suppose also works) me to play with them again tonight. I was willing to do so, but only if we met at noon and rehearsed.

I put them through their paces and we had an excellent performance this evening.

Their drummer was simply not doing his job. For those who understand live performing, the drummer has a very specific job. It's pretty easy - in a way. It's his job to count and he's actually the person who's supposed to provide the meter at which the band plays.

It seems they've been... Hmm... I'm trying to think of a polite politicking way to say this? It seems they've been playing with a guitarist, who's also their lead vocalist, who is not very good. I do know the guitarist that I was standing in for. I've never heard him with this band - but we've played the same stage, just not at the same time.

I'm not sure how to describe this, and I'm trying to be brief...

He has a bit of an ego, or so I'm told. He's also been making the band follow him and, for those who understand live performances, you really shouldn't follow the guitarist - totally. Sure, the guitarist can give cues and can even lead the band but, musically, you really need to all be in time and that time is best counted by the guy with the big bang instrument that's, you know, kind of meant to keep time since... Since... Since, well, since music was probably invented.

That's what the drum does.

So, they all have skill but they were in shambles. I suspect they could do fairly well (which, in this industry, means maybe not actually having to hold down other jobs) and they were absolutely wonderful tonight.[1] I mean that, with the utmost sincerity.

I've played with some very, very good people. One a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 being the barest minimum standard to perform live music for money - not the basest of people to pick up an instrument and bang on it - and 10 being a highly qualified philharmonic), I'd give the Friday night performance a solid 3.

Yeah... I'd give 'em a 3...

So, with some practice today (and I did drive them pretty hard), I'd give them a 5.5. That's actually a fantastic rating from me - I rate stuff pretty hard. I suspect they could reach a solid 7 with an 8 being a good night. I put most bar bands at about a 4.

I'm absolutely failing at keeping this short...

Anyhow, I'm now faced with a bit of a problem - conundrum, as it were...

See, I've been told, "David," because that's my name and I'm never a Dave, "we'd really like it if you would start a band. We'll quite this band and join your band, right now."

I laughed and politely declined. I am, after all, retired. I don't want anything to do with the work of getting gigs, of chasing gigs, or managing, of babysitting, of teaching, of setting up, of tearing down, of traveling, or any of that shit...

But, I'd be a liar if I said it hadn't been gnawing at me ever since. I don't care about the money, but the leadership role in a band of young musicians with talent - a band that I can shape and mold. A group of kids that I can teach, not just to be better musicians but how to perform. They're all great artists, waiting to come out. They've been relying on the stage presence of a guitarist who appears to be doing more harm than good.

At the same time, I don't really have the time to devote to it. Well, I could adjust and make the time.

I keep thinking, "Well, I could give them a year." That wouldn't stop me from doing most of the things on my schedule. I can still farm but I won't be able to do any of the travel I'd planned. I don't need the money, but I'd have an obligation to them - and they'd be living off this money. To them, that's important.

I can easily get gigs. I've got ample connections so that'd be easy enough. I'd actually just put one of them in charge...

I don't know. LOL

I'm the guy who "knows everything" but, for this one, I don't really know. I'm retired - but damned if it isn't tempting.

Anyhow, I'll get something uploaded in a moment. I just wanted to cut/paste that and get the thread started.

Who sings?

I did quite a bit of it last night, but I don't prefer to.

I will sing. I just don't enjoy it. I'm not that good. I've worked with good vocalists. (From of Voat has heard me sing.)
