DO take a shower before hand.

DON'T let anyone with Cheetos fingers touch your mouse.

I haven't been to a LAN in years, usually computer nerds have good hygiene.

It's the MtG crowd you have to bring a noseplug for.

DO:

  • Bring an Ethernet cable of at least 10m (30 feet) with you, even it this is not asked for. Do it anyway.
  • Bring a surge protector with at least 3 outlets on it. (2 for PC and 1 for your phone)
  • Talk to others. The more friendly you are, the more likely your neighbors will look after your stuff.
  • Install all the games you want to play (or at least the larger installs). Don't be a network resource hog!
  • Have some local multiplayer games installed if you own them (Starwhal, Nidhogg, Duck Game, Gang Beasts, ...). If you have some configured controllers for your PC, bring them too. Those game might seem dull, but they are lots of fun when played with company.
  • Don't drink too much alcohol or energy drinks. Drink with moderation. If you feel you are getting sleepy then get up and walk around for a bit, drink a coffee and eat something.
  • Clean up your keyboard and mouse if you mind what other think of you.
  • Make sure you hide all your things on your desktop that you don't want anyone to see.
  • If you see someone struggling with their stuff, then lend a hand. Just make sure your stuff remains safe while you are helping someone else.
  • Double check you have everything with you. It would suck if you forgot a cable.
  • Update everything and do some anti-virus scans beforehand.
  • Get fresh air and get up at least 10 minutes every 2 hours.

DON'T:

  • Don't touch anyone else's stuff without asking first.
  • Don't be a network resource hog!
  • Don't use any programs that monitors network activity. You will be kicked out for this.
  • Don't harass cosplayers. Be nice to them. Pictures and talking is cool. Touching and staring is not (unless they want you to...)

Don't forget to wear something light and have something to wear over it. It might get hot or really cold depending on the air conditioning and the outside temperature.

What LAN are you going to?

If it is 4 days, sleep at least 4 hours on the first 2 nights and on the last night just go for the all nighter! Your sleeping rhythm will be fucked anyways.

Don't drink that much energy drinks! Favor coffee instead,

Take a long enough LAN cable. At least 10 m.

Arrive quite early, before the lights are turned off and before there is a lot of people so it is easier to put all the cables and shit.

Make new friends! Nobody will bite!

Join competitions and activities.

Get fresh air! Headaches are not fun!

Shower often.

And one of the most important tips is to make a packing list! It sucks when you don't have all your stuff with you.

Make a pack list of stuff you will need:

Your rig and monitor/laptop

All necessary cables (triple check these... you don't want to be the guy running around begging for a spare power cord)

Appropriate amount of clothes and your sanitary products (if it's a LAN that lasts several days)

Don't rely on promises of wireless, bring an ethernet cable

Don't rely on promises of "we have enough power outlets", bring a multisocket outlet

Depending on catering at the location, bring food and drinks to last you the time

Ensure your PC is up to date, which especially includes your virus and Windows. Also your games should be patched, too. Nothing is worse than wanting to join a game just to realise that you are one patch behind and having to download said patch over a connection that's slowing down to crawl because of a hundred simultaneous users.

IF you want to do file sharing make sure you have it all well organised in a place you feel comfortable with giving other people access to.

UPDATE!

Don't be like Gregg who had to wait 2 hours because he didn't take 5mins before the start of the LAN to update DOTA

Whatever you do, don't cheat.

EDIT: The stupid fluff at the beginning of that video is ~0:18 long.

Label all your cables. Also, if you have extra, bring extra. Might make new friends by providing forgotten cables. But seriously label those suckers.
