If it's a small lan amongst friends, expect good times unless you're not prepared networking wise then expect about an hour of troubleshooting and THEN good times.

can confirm. Had a lan party and spent a hour wondering why everyone was at 400ping. QoS was on, non-assigned MAC's get 15% of max network speed.

Don't have anything you don't want other people to see on your hard drive

I haven't been to a LAN in years, usually computer nerds have good hygiene.

It's the MtG crowd you have to bring a noseplug for.

download all of your games beforehand, shower, wear light cloths (It could get hot), and carry an extra surge protector (you never know).

Make a pack list of stuff you will need:

Your rig and monitor/laptop

All necessary cables (triple check these... you don't want to be the guy running around begging for a spare power cord)

Appropriate amount of clothes and your sanitary products (if it's a LAN that lasts several days)

Don't rely on promises of wireless, bring an ethernet cable

Don't rely on promises of "we have enough power outlets", bring a multisocket outlet

Depending on catering at the location, bring food and drinks to last you the time

Ensure your PC is up to date, which especially includes your virus and Windows. Also your games should be patched, too. Nothing is worse than wanting to join a game just to realise that you are one patch behind and having to download said patch over a connection that's slowing down to crawl because of a hundred simultaneous users.

IF you want to do file sharing make sure you have it all well organised in a place you feel comfortable with giving other people access to.

What LAN are you going to?

If it is 4 days, sleep at least 4 hours on the first 2 nights and on the last night just go for the all nighter! Your sleeping rhythm will be fucked anyways.

Don't drink that much energy drinks! Favor coffee instead,

Take a long enough LAN cable. At least 10 m.

Arrive quite early, before the lights are turned off and before there is a lot of people so it is easier to put all the cables and shit.

Make new friends! Nobody will bite!

Join competitions and activities.

Get fresh air! Headaches are not fun!

Shower often.

And one of the most important tips is to make a packing list! It sucks when you don't have all your stuff with you.
