I agree with a lot of the users in here! I listen to all kinds of genres, too, to so my suggestions are pretty varied. For more calming, instrumental music, I like Hans Zimmer (the Inception OST is awesome), Helen Jane Long, and Ludovico Einaudi. For more indie stuff, I love Vampire Weekend, Broods, Phoenix, The Neighbourhood, Daughter, and alt-j, to name a few. On the contemporary folk side, I adore Bon Iver, Ben Howard, Ry X, Laura Marling, and people like them. I recommend trying 8tracks, too -- it is a site of user-created playlists that fit any genre, mood, or artist you can think of. It's great when I need a quick selection of music. :)

Never heard of 8track before, but it seems pretty neat!

It really is! You can make your own playlists there, too. I like to gather all my songs in there for easy listening. The only thing that is annoying is that there can only be two tracks by the same artist on any given playlist due to copyright reasons, but it's not much of a bother if you're just browsing. The recommendations 8tracks gives are also pretty accurate. :)

I'd recommend Ludovico Einaudi, The Mountain Goats, or Minus the Bear. Also Chevelle or Volbeat. I'd link to a few songs but I'm on mobile

Just took a quick listen to The Mountain Goats. I quite like them - very chill.

As someone who listen's to pretty much everything but not knowing much about your tastes I'd recommend Leonard Cohen (especially his older stuff like I'm Your Man), Panic! At the Disco (All their albums are pretty good; If you like the other suggestions I recommend their newer stuff mostly), Fitz & The Tantrums, Cage The Elephant, Twenty-One Pilots, Grouplove, Foster The People, Frank Sinatra (Always a classic!), Jack White (both Solo and his bands), and Florence and The Machine.

The Black Keys, Amelie's Original Soundtrack or The White Album.

Anything that is universally loved, would be a great start for someone who generally doesn't listen to music.

Starset is a great rock band. They're pretty recent, but their album Transmissions is amazing. Link to the album
