I think it stops someone swinging an axe from hitting you in the face. The armor has it on the left side, so a right handed opponent would strike from that direction. A bit like the Roman gladiators who only had armor on their left side.

It's to make the jousting pole go off the side shoulder instead of going under your helmet and killing you.

Part of the faceplate is on a hinge and you can pull it up I think. Though visibility would have been poor with the whole thing on. Some jousting helmets didn't even open, since you didn't really need all that peripheral vision when jousting. Some were even welded to the breastplate.
