ISIS becoming what it did was made possible by the Syrian civil war. Radicals can charge to the forefront in a shooting war. As an aside that is where white nationalists have their best chance to be a player here. This was facilitated by Russia and Iran propping up Assad in the early stages when more moderate alternatives were still possible.

Isis orginated as an off shoot of al qaeda in iraq. An off shoot of a group that was brutally put down by saddams intelligence services

Yeah, it originated as an anti-coalition insurgency. It was pretty moribund after Fallujah though. Hopping the border to take on Assad is what revitalized them.
