It does make sense to have them separate tho, as they typically tend to be two totally different types of posts.

That was easy

Why not let the OP write a description when submitting a link? I don't understand.
well, because all you'd need to do is add the link to the self.post. Write the description of the self post in the body of the post, and the add the link underneath. i mean, that's how it's done elsewhere, and it works pretty flawlessly. no reason to change it really.

What's wrong with this format though?
i don't see how this is any different. show me the finished product and how it would look to post both of those things at once.

With this idea it brings about some decisions that need to be made in the behavior of the site.
With self.post, clicking the title take you to the discussion/comments. With a link, it takes you to that external url.
Now, when you combine the two. Where will clicking the title take you to? The comments or the link? Should it open both in new tabs?
If it opens the link, then you have to go back to get into the comments, which defeats the purpose of having both in 1. If it opens the comments, then there is no way to get to the link, which is a user experience issue.
The best compromise is to have 2 separate types of posts, which is already what is in place.

It's mainly to separate the points between a self.post and a link.
I find it weird on Voat, because self.posts are classified under SCP, whereas on Reddit they're not in Submission karma.

I'm glad they are. It makes it seem like self posts are important here too!

Yeah, it was goofy as hell to have subs requiring links be put in self-post descriptions.
