Either I read it wrong or you changed it. I thought u put his wife's mother without 'side' on there. But still if his wife's mother's dad was Jewish and not her MOM then she isn't Jewish. And so her child can't be Jewish either.

dad-jew mom-non jew

kid is born = ex-wife's mom (not jew)

mom has girl with another non-jew = alex's ex-wife

ex wife = not jew

make sense now?

I covered it above. His ex-wife's mom's dad was Jewish. That's why he said on my wife's mom's side. Which 'side' means her mom/dad in this case it was her dad. Which means her grandmother was not Jewish which if you go by your talmud law then she can't be Jewish... but I don't really know the Jew laws.
