Democrats are stronger when the country is weaker. They like to take a baseball bat to your knee and say "vote for me, and I will make someone else pay for your wheelchair."
People vote for their social group first, and their political needs second. If everyone is the same social group, then they vote for their political needs. This means people get the politicians that represent them, for the most part. But if people have different social groups, then politicians play on social divisions and are free to ignore the people's political needs, sell themselves out to special interests, and are more motivated to increase social destabilization so that they can get away with more.
