Once when I was young I went surfing with my brother and dad, I was still a beginner but experienced enough to hold my own in the smaller waves. Anyway that day the currents were pretty strong and I got caught in a riptide. I didn't realize until I was pretty far out and I tried paddling back in straight as I didn't know the rule to paddle to the side. Needless to say I was tired and scared, I was pretty far out when my dad noticed, luckily he is a BAMF used the rip tide to reach me, then pushed me to the side far in enough to where the big waves were breaking (take in mind the break was pretty shallow so it was still pretty far from the shore) he pushed me unto a wave and I rode my scared ass to the shore, he then bodysurfed his way back.

Also this one time we were at the beach and I realized I was wearing underwear under my bathing suit, so I quickly went back to the room to take them off. When I got back to the beach I saw a big group of people including my mom, I ran out to see what was going on, and a realized she was crying. I asked what's wrong she saw me and freaked out and hugged me. I forgot to tell her I was going to go change and she thought I was taken by a rip tide.

TLDR my mom thought I died when I went to take off my underwear.

OP, try to mark your post as [Serious] if it pertains to something like this. Unless answers like /u/nomerasques's and /u/Smoothskin's are what you were looking to get!

I certainly felt like I was near death at the time. I let a friend drive me home when she was quite obviously drunk. I don't know what mental gymnastics I did at the time to convince myself I'd be ok, but once we were left of center on the highway I was pretty well scared out of my mind. After a wild hour or so I was home ok, and for much of the time we didn't see anyone else on the road- thus I question weather it was really "near death" or if I'm blowing things out of proportion. My simple experience in suburban america left me extremely shaken, so I can only imagine how people that live through war or natural disasters feel.
