Your understanding checks out with what my understanding was, which is good. I was never bad with math, just never took anything past high school, so after a certain point I kinda nod my head along. I could follow the picture and tell what was happening, but I wouldn't be able to duplicate it because I wouldn't know where to begin.
Our TI calculators pretty much only got used to make shitty games on.

I'm a TI man, myself. Though I've never bothered with games on one.
My first computer use was with a computer that HP called a calculator. If you Google HP 9100, you can find an awesome video about it. My first exposure was either in 1970 or 1971. I can't be more specific because that was too many years ago.
