Ice fishing is fun when you get good spots! Granted I'm in a totally different locale, but I really HATED ice fishing until I found a lake where I could catch shit (perch). They are so fun!
Oh, I can catch lots of fish through the ice. I am not interested.
I will party like a rock star in the ice shack. I am just not going to go check traps. I will jig for saltwater smelts. That is done inside the shack.
We have some luxurious shacks up here. Some folks stay in them all winter, including sleeping. I don't mind that, it's out on the ice where you get my middle finger. I am good until -20° f. I can dress for and accept -40° but only for a little while. Those are adjusted for wind chill. I get a little grumpy at 0° because that is when I know real cold is coming and some dumb ass is going to get me called out.
Err... I'm on the search and rescue squad. I'm a bit of a rope specialist. I'm the guy they belay in to pull your body out of the rapids and to go back for your kayak. Hopefully, you're still alive. I'm the guy who will rope down from a buddy's chopper and spend the night with you until it is safe to move you in the morning. I'm the guy they send up Bald Mountain to sit in the ledge with you until we can get a chopper there to move you during daylight hours.
I don't much like it when it gets too cold, but I do love the snow. I'm good until 0°. It's then when things get grumpy. Even my snowmobile suits are heated.
Also, we consider perch to be pretty much junk fish. They don't eat them here. We mostly eat trout, salmon, and bass.
Ok, fine. You are much colder than here. I will admit that I'm still 'new' to even this despite being here for a few years. My SO let me step out on the ice for the first fucking time and it was a small lake that pops and cracks. I was like WTF, STOP DROP AND ROLL. STOP DROP AND ROLL. and realized that was for fire. Fucking hell. I didn't take to icefishing that year at all, especially since I didn't catch shit all.
I got into it actually just this past year when I caught shit (which was perch). I used to eat perch, brim, sunfish previously since I'm originially from the south. Plus, they give great fishin confdence! Here, you aren't supposed to let them go, either and are prob a trash fish, but I like the taste anyways. Also, we've thought about the search and rescue and really should join up. We do a lot of dumb shit to get ourselves stuck and unstuck, which makes good practice. I didn't realize how much 'fuckin off' helped until we had a friend fall through the ice and we just jumped into action and knew each others' parts.
I'm glad that it doesn't get too cold here. Everyone from where I grew up is all like "Oh! It's so pretty!" and I'm like.. fuck u, come visit for fucking once.
Also, I'm inebriated but like the trout that looks like salmon meat.
