Tencent says there are only 300,000 AI engineers worldwide, but millions are needed - The Verge
'According to the study, compiled by the Tencent Research Institute, there are just 300,000 “AI researchers and practitioners” worldwide, but the “market demand” is for millions of roles. '
'Tencent’s new “2017 Global AI Talent White Paper” suggests the bottleneck here is education. '
'It’s well-established that talent is in short supply in the AI industry, but a new report from Chinese tech giant Tencent underscores how great the need might be. '
'Around the world, tech giants regularly complain about the difficulty hiring AI engineers, and the demand has pushed salaries to absurd heights. '
'One independent AI lab told the publication that there were only 10,000 individuals worldwide with the right skills to spearhead serious new AI projects. '
interesting. those salary numbers are way higher than my "normal programmer" salary. I've been out of the job hunting game for years, but I don't recall seeing much for AI when I last looked. I'm guessing they're largely hiring in the bigger tech cities, so my local area wouldn't have much.

that explains a fucking lot.
its way harder to find resources for coding AI then it should be, because the demand seems weirdly rare

Hmm... I see resources for NN, AI, and ML as I go about my 'net travels. Someone should make a sub, I'd probably subscribe and add content. I moderate enough already so I'm not interested in making another sub.
