Society went completely apeshit on protecting children. It was when my Gen X cohort took to driving their kids to and from school every day.

They grew up during the bush era, with free speech zones, "with us or against us", dissent is treason, and the govt wiping its ass on the bill of rights. When they became rebellious teens they switched to the other side of the fence while at the same time dialing the neocon crap up to eleven.
