Ignorance. All good jokes contain a sliver of truth in them. It is the juxtaposition between where the truth in the joke is leading you logically and where the joke ends up going that makes it funny. If you don't know/understand the truth underlining the joke before you hear it, you are more apt to be confused than amused by the punchline. Same thing when you first encounter a new meme, until its backstory is explained, or self evident, sometimes the meaning gets lost in translation.
