It does not deter crime, it is too easily politicized, and it cannot be undone when applied to the innocent (which happens way too often). A country is better off without it.
(if you were facing the death sentence for a crime you had not committed, do you think your legal system is good enough to get you off the hook?)

Our Justice system in America is for correction. Hence the department of corrections bit. If someone cannot be corrected or will never be released you could make a compelling argument that life in prison with no hope of leaving is cruel and unusual punishment. This justifies execution beyond even the punitive.

Any sentence that is longer then the convicts average life expectancy without the possibility of parole, should be an automatic execution. It is wrong to warehouse people for the sake of sponging tax payer money. Put the animals down and be done with it. Housing them is a timebomb, because in certain situations it is legal to just release them. If the authority can not provide safety for prisoners they have to be released.

I LIKE IT.
That said, there have been more than a few wrongful executions that have ended up being carried out due to a corrupt and inept justice system. I say we expand it nationwide with a stipulation that if anyone is found to have wrongfully contributed to the wrongful execution of any man that we also execute that individual. This would include witnesses, judges, prosecutors and cops.
Problem solved.
Edit: oh yeah, the cost. Allow victims, family's of victims, to administer the execution.(even hire it out if necessary) No more *here's your three drug cocktail for a nice peaceful nap shit. A bullet to the back of the head motherfucker.
