Change your name to Pajeet Panakpaneer, have no idea how to code, work for next to nothing.

Write good code. Good programmers can recognize people talented in the art. Build your portfolio with whatever, just write nice code that will make them think of you as a future colleague. The devil recognizes his own, and so do programmers.

I’ve enjoyed writing in the functional paradigm, but I’ve heard this is looked down upon. Should I stick more with OO / imperative, or could mixing clean functional code in (in Python or Swift projects, say) be seen as a positive?

Yeah? Its like saying you want to be a dancer and then getting rejected by a strip club.

My personal advise is dont do software. I have many reasons, including I have done software and I've gotten into this discussion before I cant be bothered doing it again.

My professional advice is that there are countless under the radar software companies out there. I worked for some small businesses before that had massive clients. In these cases, youre looking for their customers and not so much the employer themselves. The businesses I have done work for are completely unheard of, but their clients are the selling point on a resume.
