A better understanding of the culture can be found in Hemmingway, and while it may not excuse this behavior it at least helps to explain from another viewpoint, and a particularly articulate one at that.

I've read Hemingway. I don't share his romanticism of senseless violence.

edit: unless it's fictional violence. I'm not crazy.

Me either, but I value his descriptive powers, because they enable me to experience second-hand what I otherwise would not have the opportunity to understand. His descriptions of the bullfights as they were in their pure and most brutal form are an invaluable resource, especially if one wishes to change a culture that is hundreds of years old. Death in the Afternoon, in particular shed a lot of light on the subject for me. I too hate to see animals suffer.

Too bad they're intentionally handicapped. I don't get how the media pretty much glorifies it.

As long as they are not glorifying the killing of the animals. it's their choice! why not let them run with the Bulls. For that matter even if they were killing the animals. it's a different culture. They have a right to do as they see fit. Rights work both ways.

They do glorify the killing of the animals. If you didn't already know that, the article brings it up as well, but I thought this was common knowledge at this point.

Also, yes, it is the choice of those people, not the choice of the bulls, which is where the problem is. I don't get what rights you're referring to when you say rights work both ways. Are you concerned that someone will come in and shut down their celebration or something?

The point I was making is it's not up to us to decide. Sure it's brutal, bloody and something that you wouldn't want your kids to watch. "Rights work both ways" ! You have a right to objecte to the violence, of the killing or the animals. They have the right to do it . Sorry but they do.

The entire event glorifies the senseless torture and slaughter of animals. I'm not a cultural relativist when it comes to basic decency. Animal cruelty is wrong. I don't believe anyone has a inalienable right to torture animals for the fun of it.
