People need non falsifiable beliefs to orient themseleves in the world. If someone respectable comes along go to tell them to believe in transcendent values of truth, responsibility, and courage; I honestly don't mind. People are hungry for the certainty that religion brings, which is why we see such affection for the state in the shadow of crumbling churches.

I've thought a lot about this a lot lately. You have to have faith in something. Math justifies itself according to its own rules. Same with logic, and science. At the root of science is a kernel of knowledge, but it comes without the wisdom of what to do with it. Faith is wisdom without knowledge or understanding, but that does not make it less real. That which you believe without room for persuasion is your God.

Some have made a God of freedom. Others of equality. Compassion. Power. To live your life without examining the nature of your God is dangerous, and it is that danger that Peterson hopes to steer us away from.

What you move toward is up to you. That's what separates him from a cult leader.
