The thing with hydrogen is that it takes an enormous amount of space to store it even at high pressures, petroleum has the benefit of weighing the hydrogen atoms down with carbon atoms so it'll stay liquid at normal temperatures.

Toyota, Honda and Hyundai manage to store 5 Kg in their cars at 10,000 psi, there's talk of going to 15,000 psi in the future. The range of the Honda H2 Clarity is 366 miles, so that's pretty good.
