$1700 is just the start. you'll need more money to campaign/get signatures/etc. whole system is geared towards allowing only the rich/wealthy to power.
the average person, the masses DO NOT HAVE ANY TRUE REPRESENTATIVES in the US government.

I've seen a good many candidates at local and state levels get elected with little more than sweat equity and community support. Most certainly not rich.
