The colosseum has been greatly mischaracterized by modern media as only a place of death. It was chiefly a place of entertainment. "The Colosseum....was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles....animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology." The executions were like half-time shows, not the main reason it existed. It was for theatre, feats of strength, skills, etc.

No, but I think prisons should be lawless kill zones for those who are there. Let criminals kill xriminals.

No, that just breeds the strongest criminal. And the strongest criminal was usually granted a pardon. As much as I like a good ol' deathmatch, I agree with the above poster that public hangings would be a much better of disposing of filth and satisfying the people.
