Since some of my favourites have already been mentioned, I'll add the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch. It's quite a lot like The Dresden Files, in that it combines detective mysteries and the supernatural, only with a very British touch. Oh, and the main character is black without that fact being constantly part of the plot, I found that very refreshing.

Asimov's Robot series. Great character development and great sci-fi mystery stories.

King-Killer Chronicles, by Patrick Rothfuss. Dark Tower, by Stephen King. All of the early Raymond E. Feist books.

Night Angel - Brent Weeks. Avoided because of stupid covers but quite good

Farseer trilogy -Robin Hobb. Same type of story vain as above

Sheepfarmer's Daughter (Deed of Paksenarrion) - Elizabeth Moon

From the very limited amount of book series I've listened to, my favorite is Enderverse.

I'd suggest you get the audiobooks. It has great voice acting, and the author thinks that's the best way to experience his books.

I read Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series about 25 years ago in sixth grade. It was my introduction to reading fantasy and I've never forgotten it. From there I traveled to Narnia and then Middle Earth. I've read all of those series multiple times and the characters feel like old friends. It all started with one great librarian.
