We agreed

These two words are the most important part. The stength and terms of the contract is the first thing that matters.

It may be worth to get a small loan to pay for the lawyer if you have a case to win back the commission you were never given (edit: maybe damages too). Lawyer will let you know if that is likely to happen.

Was there a contract signed? If so, lawyer up and get your money. But, don't expect to keep working there after the lawsuit is over.

Do you have a written employment agreement that proves your assertion? If not, resign immediately with no notice as you are being taken advantage of.

Do you have proof he paid you a commission at first? Was it listed as a separate item on your pay? That would go a long way in proving this was the original agreement even if you don't have a contract. If you can't prove you ever got a commission and there is no contract it will be difficult to pursue in court.

The time to ask if your commissions would be retroactively payed would have been in January and if he agreed then you'd have something to fight over. As is it doesn't actually seem like your employer ever lied in a way that would mean your present-term compensation was less than agreed upon. So your grievance is over future compensation, which means there's not much you can do.

Guy sounds like a manipulative asshole in any case.

If you are in US, go talk to your local labor board and take your employment contract with you. For very straight forward breaches of contract, they can often start and complete an investigation without every involving a lawyer.

There is just no way to get good advice for this type of question on the internet. Too much depends on the jurisdiction–not only the laws of your jurisdiction, but also the procedures, whether or not judges are elected, how long the judge who would hear your case has been in office, how jurisdiction is divided among the courts, and so forth.

Call a lawyer or go to legal aid. Keep calling lawyers until you are convinced whether or not your case is worth pursuing. If a lawyer requires a consultation fee, then pay it. If it's not worth the consultation fee, then it's not worth the filing fee.
