Wasn't light supposed to be a pretty boy? been ages since I read it, but I thought he was some super smart "elite" of japan with good grades, good looks and good social standing

Also black or not that was just some scene not a dramatic confrontation of the two leads. Also also why are they doing this? The story goes to absolute shit by the end and isn't half as good as people make out even with the crisp packet

Yeah Light is a pretty boy, who is super confident and has genius level intellect. This guy is average looking and acts awkward as fuck. L is supposed to be a genius too but he's like a bum, he's not supposed to be attractive, he's supposed to be dirty looking, malnourished (he pretty much only eats sweets) who doesn't sleep much at all hence the huge bags under his eyes. Also L is more Columbo-like in his approach, he's not super direct that he's on to Light, he plays it cool and just drops subtle hints to Light that he's on to him. The whole story is basically about the mind games Light and L play with each other. Two genius minds going at it.

The only way this can end up being good is if they follow the ending of the Japanese live action movie. That ending was perfect and way better than the manga/anime ending.

I havent watched the 2006 movie, which certainly will now, but I actually was moved by the ending of the anime. I don't know how you could improve it. It was so perfect when . I'll take your word for it for now, but I'm skeptical!

How does that end?

The manga got bloated with dumb extra characters that made no sense

To calm your woes, they already made a live action movie in 2006 that was accurate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Note_(2006_film)

This looks so bad. They force a black guy down our throats as L, one of the sharpest minds on Earth. If they wanted actual diversity they could've gone with an east asian (Japanese, Chinese, Korean). It would've been a way to honor the source material, even though I believe L is 75% white in the manga. In that scene L is just fucking terrible, so is Light.

L isn't just black, he's a black ninja. I swear, this is going to piss off the "cultural appropriation" people AND the "diversity" people.

And I don't care. Read the comic or watch the anime. You'll have a lot more fun.

TBF, both the black and white guy should be Japanese, if you want to call out forced diversity. I'm just being honest, here. Acting was kind of ass tho; it's like they're trying to emote the way an anime character does but that doesn't translate too well when you're dealing with actual people, unless it's a comedy.

This series is damn late though; probably should've been like 2012-2014 or something like that. I'd actually much rather a live-action series of Zeiram or BLAME!, or Dorohedoro.

I don't even mind Black L but Jesus Christ that Light is fucking terrible.

Will still watch because I liked the animated series and Willem Dafoe is always fun it the clips I'm seeing do not instill any confidence.

And I mean, hey, a white guy is playing Micheal Jackson, so it balances out.

You try to find a black actor who turned "white", they pretty much HAD to cast white or use makeup.
