Yep! Technology has just made it much easier.
If you want to talk about how long they have been storing massive amounts we should probably say about 5-8 years before the AT&T Warrentless wiretapping stuff came to light (at the time it seemed like they were still making efforts to filter/dump data that didn't look interesting, I suspect they store EVERYTHING now). That is about when they were developing the tech to reduce most of the data into highly compressible metadata so it could be stored for a very long time.
I would venture a guess that retention is now somewhere around 60 years, growing daily... (Lots of crazy stuff has happened with de-dupe and compression on enterprise storage over the last few years) but the oldest 'modern' data is probably closer to around 10-13 years worth. I could be wrong, that is based on environments I have seen combined with what is available in the enterprise market for deep-cheep storage.
