There isn't anything being sold and if enough people feel the way you do there never will be :) Thanks for the feedback.
So this is like a customizable electronic whiteboard? I see some merit to that, but not at 90$ a unit. I've bought tablets, and cell phones for less.

It isn't touch screen. It is customize display and also you can use your phone as a controller. If you update the firmware you could make your own commands. $90 is a lot but a regular plaque is ~$50 we have a large display 5.5 inch but also there will be a battery and mount. The mount will be screw or tape on for doors and for cubical walls there will be clips. For someone working in an office $90 isn't a lot if it helps get your $1,000 or more raise :)
At 90$ its more than the cost of a cellphone but less functional. Apps are free, and could make it do just the same thing. If you were pitching the idea to me, that would be my response.
Yeah, he wants this to replace name plaques, apparently. And he's pretty set on giving them animations, along with all the extra hardware to support them, on the idea that it'd be seen as "fun", not tacky. And that you'll somehow get a raise because of it.
The alternative he wasn't quite pushing as hard was a programmable e-ink screen. In that case you'd lose the animations but be able to run it for years off a watch battery. It'd still be programmable, so you can say you're at lunch, for example.

Well you're going to need a marketing team to express what it is more clearly. Do you have an images.
Good luck. I hope you can launch it. So it's a messaging device with grayscale. How is that going to work within the phone market which everyone already has to have?
Maybe if it had a capibility phones don't already have (just one is needed). Like operating over a p2p network, or allowing people to flash the OS, or being a very cheap wifi only device compaired to a phone, or one that would peer to someone with wifi and then use their wifi to get out so people don't have to pay for messaging and can use it even where they don't know the wep key (mobile without bill).
See these ideas are good because even when you don't market them successfully the problems solved are valuable in general so you can get bought.

This is their marketing.

Pretty much, trying to get feedback. Friends and family are good but too biased ;)

For the Kick Starter we are having professional commercial made. I wrote the script and the actors actually liked it. They are giving us a discount because they laughed and they know we are small.
We have a website, forum and facebook page up. Google dPlaque it was just launched 1 week ago so you may have to look a bit.
Phones aren't hung on walls or doors. Think of this as a billboard to show your tech skills. If you make a cool animation like a pacman running around eating your name people will notice and it may get you a raise :)
