If you have a household income above around $120,000, you are in the top fifth of the distribution

They neglect to factor in the wide difference of cost of living in various areas of the country. Comparing income in small town Mayberry and NYC is apples and oranges.

If 2% consider themselves upper class, then I say a fair number of them are deluding themselves. The upper class is at most 1% and more properly maybe 0.5%. That's not to say they are middle class. More upper middle (or petit bourgeois).

The middle class is large, though. So 90% doesn't surprise me even if the real number is probably more like 70%-80%.

It is a question of class, after all, not pure economic numbers. And that needs to consider much more than income or net worth. It includes all sorts of cultural signifiers such as attitudes, world views, modes of behavior, etc.
