Judging by the few dislikes, it is apparent that people really don't want to even discuss this. Both the over and under arguments are only valid points if the people in your household put the toilet paper roll on the toilet paper roll holder. What about those bastards that just leave a roll sitting on top of the toilet or the floor or worse yet, on top of the brown cardboard from a completely depleted roll of toilet paper. At that point, over or under is useless as they most likely just wrap the toilet paper around their hand a few times like they're wrapping a pallet of boxes in cellophane.

The original patent makes the correct orientation pretty clear: 124-year-old patent solves the 'over versus under' toilet paper roll debate

Obviously having a patent as backup is powerful evidence to support your argument.

I think we all know the real answer.

Over.

I've never seen an advertisement/ TV show/ Movie that depicts it under.

Over stops the risk of of the toilet paper coming in contact with the wall and makes it easier to find and grasp the end of the toilet paper. Patterned toilet paper looks better when hung over because most companies create the patterns to face the right way when the roll is hung over. Under looks tidier and hides the end from view and stops animals (especially cats) and small children from unravelling the entirety of the roll when it is bat at. Under generally reduces rolls from unravelling during an earthquake or when driving in an RV.

if it's impossible to actually get any toilet paper, then you have it in under mode.

As long as I have paper I am happy. I don't think it is an issue at our house.
