Oh my god! That put on skin would cause spit production and make a person feel like they have been in the sun too long, clamy, disoriented.
Anyone can easily test/confirm what i purport: take 40% deet and spray a persons back. 4 pumps should be enough. That person should be seen spiting and if asked would say more tired than normal and might also say their thinking feel slower than it could. Wiki for deet reports this in forest workers
E a 2-3 sprays of 20% on my arms is enough to feel the effect. So far this summer ive used no deet at all, it is too toxic for my liking. Spraying it on clothes or surrpunding area i would do yet i have citronella for that

For spraying on fabric, you can use Permethrin. Just keep it away with cats.

I have permethrin but save it for nasty spiders and tent door openings.
Stuff works way well. I dont sit well killing bugs indiscrimantly but i wholeheartedly agree it's the best when you want/need to keep bugs at bay.
Anything against skin that would permeate i wouldnt do.
Citronella and smoke are the go tos. Before a expedition to never gone woods ohh yeah id spray stuff.
Piperonal butoxide is the prominate ingredient in sawyers. It is what gives a milky color and potentiates the effect. The safety of that chem i have no idea of
