One of the best resources around. Use it to experiment with movesets, EV distribution, items, without all the in-game work.
One of the hardest things for me in transitioning to competitive battling was not being power focused. I was 100% a glass-cannon user. Every pokemon I used was high power and speed with crap defenses. That fell apart as soon as I hit a wall I didn't have coverage for.
My favorite play style now is stall and annoying teams. I love me some prankster pokemon and toxic walls.

Just realised I probably could have submitted this to /v/smogon . Oh well, a bit late now.

I was in the same boat a couple months ago, I would suggest watching some videos of tournaments/vgc battles. There is also a chat function on pokemon showdown that has various chat rooms about learning.
I got started by watching Justin Flynn on YouTube, and also watched some verlisify. Verlis is more for specific builds or ideas whereas Justin does recordings of his battle spot games with commentary as well as other things like catching shinies.
