This isn't about being punished for talking about something offensive. He was being purposefully inflammatory and outright wrong. Yes, we aren't getting Mexico's best, but Mexico's best isn't as desperate to start a new life. There is no data to suggest that any significant percentage of Mexican immigrants commit violent crimes, rape, or any of the like.
The only reliable data on rapists by demographic is 18 years old and does not support any statement that any significant percentage of Mexican immigrants are rapists, as Trump claimed.
The data on violent crimes doesn't suggest that a hispanic person is any more likely to commit a violent crime than a white person.
But this data is only about the demographics in genereal, not specifically Mexican Immigrants. And that's the issue I have with Donald Trump's statements. If there was any evidence to back up his inflammatory claims, I would think, "Ok, he was certainly crass but at least he's trying to tackle a problem with this country". There is no such data, however, he was just spouting what he thought to be true, and for a Presidential candidate that is not only inappropriate but the thought of him being in the White House is frightening to me. I want our next President to be someone who will fix the problems we are having without prejudice and with the knowledge of what is important and must be done, not someone who thinks something is a problem with no evidence to support it, then acts on it.
There's my two cents.
Edit: Formatting.
Trump just shot himself in the foot. The Republican party really needs to win the Latino votes, and while I believe the party itself will win the next election, it would help them to win the Latino vote. If he were to actually become the Republican candidate, it may cause future issues for him. I know he wants to run for election, but he does this every year. He has so much money it is just a fun game for him.

Why do you think the Republicans will win this coming election? (I presume you mean the Presidential election)? Can you estimate a probability for how likely you expect a Republican win to be about?

Your comment seems to imply that Mexico, and other Latin American countries, are perfect meritocracies.
Equating the net worth of immigrants with their worth as persons is probably more offensive than calling them rapists. By that standard, Paris Hilton is "the best" and Mother Teresa is a miscreant.
Having spent some time with illegal immigrants, of this I'm certain: as a whole, they are harder working, more decent, and honest than Donald Trump or any one of the presidential hopefuls from either party. If Trump spent a hour doing the job that an immigrant does 7 days a week, he would likely passout from exhaustion.

This. Exactly this. Yet nobody is talking about this. To the republican establishment illegals will help drive down wages and increase short-term profits, to the liberal establishment illegals represent a solid voting bloc helping them keep power. This is exactly why we need an outsider in the game.

Would have been nice for people to explain those downvotes.
