I think there was something else going on...either contracts about to expire or negotiations going awry. Like you said, Trump has been who he is for the past 30-years. I never got the Gordon Gecko cult-of-personality that swirled about him, but it still did exist. And everyone knows what he is like--the statement shouldn't have been surprising. So, the outrage that followed struck me as odd.

Having ignored said cult of personality I was shocked to learn what he is like.

Trump is something of an evil genius. Saying something inflammatory and generalizing racially is definitely getting Trump's name in the conversation.

Granted, to anyone paying attention it's bad press. But there will be plenty of people who only hear about this tangentially and will support Trump because he's being picked on, regardless of how fair it is.

So most of us will just write this off as Trump being an asshole but this is one way to build a stronger base, by pretending you're the oppressed, underdog candidate.

I don't think it should make him a marketplace martyr. But "he has a point (if you interpret his statements with a great deal of mercy)" is NOT a reason to support the scumbag.

Trump just shot himself in the foot. The Republican party really needs to win the Latino votes, and while I believe the party itself will win the next election, it would help them to win the Latino vote. If he were to actually become the Republican candidate, it may cause future issues for him. I know he wants to run for election, but he does this every year. He has so much money it is just a fun game for him.

Why do you think the Republicans will win this coming election? (I presume you mean the Presidential election)? Can you estimate a probability for how likely you expect a Republican win to be about?

Through history itself, the independents are going to vote Republican next election simply because Obama has such bad approval ratings.

Your comment seems to imply that Mexico, and other Latin American countries, are perfect meritocracies.

Equating the net worth of immigrants with their worth as persons is probably more offensive than calling them rapists. By that standard, Paris Hilton is "the best" and Mother Teresa is a miscreant.

Having spent some time with illegal immigrants, of this I'm certain: as a whole, they are harder working, more decent, and honest than Donald Trump or any one of the presidential hopefuls from either party. If Trump spent a hour doing the job that an immigrant does 7 days a week, he would likely passout from exhaustion.
