With all of different types of stones that can be used, is a Diamond Ring a must?

My wife has a blue sapphire on her's, and she loves it; it's her favorite stone so I took a gamble and went for that instead of "traditional" diamond.

Infact, diamonds aren't even traditional. Until the early 1900s, rings weren't even exchanged by the bride and groom. Everyone just knew they were married.

Ok. A tradition was started last mid century. All traditions start at some point.

The traditional man/womman is a fetishization of the last mid century.

The diamond ring is tradition birthed from the "greatest generation".

It is a sign of stability.

If a man can not save for and purchase a pleasing stone, how could he possibly be trusted to care for the long term stability of a household?

Buy a gold ring and spend the money you save toward a house, private school, investments, etc.
